FUGUE: CRAZY WEATHER

after John Ashbery

impermanent like a boy
at times triumphant over pain.

the red glow of imagination
on his face, having lost

his keys in the river.
having forgotten the names

of their locks. toward vaguer
cities where trees smolder

with gold finches
like handfuls of flame.

doomed like that it’s true.
a simple unconscious dignity,

a frantic incompleteness. bearing
down the furthest strip of land.

THE WELL-DRESSED MAN WITH A BEARD (REMIX)

after Wallace Stevens

After the final no there comes
a yes. The sun rejected was

the future. No things denied
denied thought out of a thing,

things thought to be the well
dressed man with a beard out

of speech. Ah petty body, ah
green honey in the heart. Here

comes a cricket’s horn humming
while form sleeps on the pillow

above the house. No sun, no
western cataract remaining in-

fallible, no would be aureole
humming inside the mind. If

a never satisfied never comes,
remaining would be enough.
